OpenSource Animation Project

Version 1.01 Released

We are happy to release The Adventures of Boris Munchausen 1.01. This is a minor update to the first episode, containing some fixes to artwork. See revision history for the full list of changes.

Notice that we have decided to change delivery file formats. Here’s what we provide now:

  • MPG – Plays mostly everywhere. Big file size. Subtitles are hardcoded – you can’t turn them off.
  • MKV – Less file size. Not as widely supported by the player as MPG. You can turn subtitles off.
  • OGV – Say “No” to proprietary codecs! Less file size, you can turn subtitles off, though some players don’t recognize embed subtitles at all.

Enjoy!

  2. The license of the sound effects are non-free so this could never be uploaded to Debian 😦

There is also no source code for the music/audio.

  3. Yes, sound effects are CC-sampling. But we can contact authors and ask for dual-license as CC-BY or something like. 😉

About the sources of music – I guess that’s too much. And BTW, what do you mean by “audio source code”? I can’t include source code of my voice, because it’s compiled inside of me. ^___^

    Anyway, it’s only beginning…

  4. Hmmm… or maybe I just not correctly understood your comment?

  5. By “source code” I simply mean that the person who made the stuff has the same formats and access to it as a random person on the street does.

The voice tracks are presumably the source code since they are probably uncompressed original recordings with no editing. Then when you build the project by running make they would be cut to the right length, silence removed, noise removed.

In contrast the music tracks are pre-built, pre-compressed MP3 files. Usually music is recorded with one or two tracks per musical instrument and mixed by an audio engineer. Those tracks should be available as separate uncompressed or losslessly compressed audio files. The mixing information should be available separately and be applied at build time, like you render a Synfig .sif file into a .ogg video file.

BTW, looking at the Munchausen code, the .avidemux files seem to contain paths that are specific to some specific person’s machine, so I wonder if it is possible to build it elsewhere.

BTW, what happened to the source of Prologue?

  6. About Prologue, I see that it is linked from the top of the page.

I would suggest also changing “Sources are available” to a link.

And probably it would be a good idea to host it on synfig.org instead of an external site.

  7. About the music: at current situation that is impossible. ^_^

Yes, .avidemux files have paths hardcoded. Maybe it’s possible to write makefile rule with sed substitution… But our plan is to get rid of avidemux in favour to mencoder. Anyway, you still can build project, because .avidemux files are not used during the build process. They jus used for creating various encoded versions afterwards. ^_^

  8. You should be able to replace avidemux/mencoder with just ffmpeg, which might be more commonly installed.

  9. FFmpeg doesn’t do hardcoded subtitles.
